Assistant/Associate Curator of American Art
The Norton Museum of Art, in West Palm Beach, Florida, seeks a dynamic museum professional to serve as the Harold and Anne Berkley Smith Curator of American Art. The curator is responsible for the collection of American art (paintings, sculpture and works on paper) dating prior to 1945 including its exhibition and research, as well proposing strategy for its development through acquisitions by purchase and donation.
The curator must have experience organizing exhibitions and co-coordinating circulating exhibitions.
The curator must be aware of the current market and possess a national network of contacts in the field of American art.
The successful candidate will minimally present an M.A. degree in the history of art (Ph.D. strongly preferred) and three years' curatorial or other relevant experience and thorough familiarity with the standards and practices of an accredited art museum. Curators at the Norton Museum of Art must be able to engage and interact effectively with the public at all levels (including patrons and collectors, docents, volunteers, and the press.) and therefore an unusually high level of personal communications proficiency is essential; superior writing and speaking skills are required from the time of employment. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues and supervisor to originate installations, exhibitions, projects and programs which maximize the use and visibility of the Museum's collection and the resources represented by the region's multitudinous private collections; he/she will work closely with donors and collectors and with other Museum divisions (e.g., Development, Communications) to identify sources of funding for such programs and to publicize them in a culturally diverse region whose population now exceeds 5 million.
The Norton Museum of Art, under new leadership, has embraced strategic planning to enhance galleries, develop the museum campus and create innovative exhibitions. It is a museum looking to the future with a strong curatorial staff.
Salary is competitive, based on experience with excellent benefits. Send CV, cover letter and 3 references to wattickj@norton.org The Norton Museum is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
