Striking Resemblance: The Portrait as Muse

The Portrait as Muse looks at just one aspect of the many approaches to camera-based artworks that we find in today’s contemporary art world. It was not that long ago that the “art photography” one encountered in a museum was limited, even non-existent. Today, even trying to define what photography is within the walls of most museums has become a complex and sometimes messy enterprise. As photographs have drastically altered how we consider and view contemporary art, so too have exhibitions seen dramatic shifts in their size, scope and complexity. This publication accompanied the exhibition Striking Resemblance: Portrait as Muse organized by the Norton Museum of Art which included artists – Valerie, Belin, Max Becher, Andrea Robbins , Hiroshi Sugimoto and Bill Viola.
