Chinese Carved Jades and Hardstones from the Norton Permanent Collection
7/3/1999 - 10/31/1999

Acquired in 1942, the jades and other hardstone carvings from the collection of Stanley Charles Nott, the Palm Beach and New York dealer, have remained among the favorite objects in the Norton's Chinese collection. Originally valued for their superb craftmanship, exotic material, and decorative appeal, these carved jades, which date for the most part to the 18th and 19th centuries, also reveal much about Chinese culture at the end of the Qing empire. They range in form from archaistic adaptations of ancient bronzes to carved jade boulders reproducing contemporary landscape paintings in minute detail. Decorative motifs draw on China's long history of applied ornament and contain numerous emblems of good fortune and long life. Inscribed imperial jades give direct testimony to the rituals of the court of the Qianlong emperor in the mid-18th century. The exhibition, which draws on one of the great strengths of the Norton's Chinese collection, places the carved jades in a new light and invites the visitor's reconsideration of these fantastic, exotic carvings. This exhibition is organized by the Norton.
