The
Norton
Museum
of Art to Present First Exhibition of Alexander Calder’s Jewelry

–
The first exhibition devoted exclusively to Alexander Calder’s unique
body of jewelry work will be presented at the
Norton
Museum
of Art from
February 23, 2008,
through
June 15, 2008.
Co-organized by the
Norton
Museum
and the Calder Foundation, the exhibition consists of approximately 100
objects, including necklaces, bracelets, brooches, earrings and tiaras.
Calder Jewelry
demonstrates how the artist’s jewelry has the same dynamic and
dimensional aspects as his celebrated mobiles, which revolutionized the
art of sculpture.
Following its debut at the Norton,
Calder Jewelry will travel to the Philadelphia
Museum of Art (July 12 –
October 19, 2008),
the Metropolitan Museum of Art (December
8, 2008
–
March 1, 2009),
and the Irish
Museum
of
Modern Art,
Dublin
(March 31 –
June 22, 2009).

Hands: Photographs and Sculpture from the Buhl Collection from
January 12 through
March 25,
2008.
The exhibition will feature 130 works by 120 artists and photographers from
the private collection of businessman and part-time Palm Beach resident, Henry M. Buhl. The
works, focusing on the human hand as inspiration, will be arranged
chronologically, revealing the depth and breath of one man's passion. The
exhibition presents works from 1840 to the present, spanning the history
of photography and providing an overview
of the dramatic changes that have taken place since the advent of the
medium. More

Hunter Gift: Elliott Erwitt and Garry Winogrand, the first in a
series of three tightly focused exhibitions to be presented in 2007 and
2008 that will celebrate the significant gift of photographs by Mrs.
Irene Hunter of
Delray Beach,
Florida
and
Manchester Center,
Vermont.
Mrs. Hunter’s gift of 162 photographs was recently given to the
Norton
Museum
and consists of some of the most important photographers of the 20th

Chimneys and Towers: Charles Demuth's Late Paintings of Lancaster
is a focused exhibition examining a key group of paintings created
towards the end of the artist's
career. The exhibition and catalogue explore
how Demuth combined elements of place, region and the past to produce
paintings of unusual visual and symbolic meanings. Like others in the
American avant-garde, he employed the "aesthetic of place" to create
works that were at once historical and contemporary. More

Medieval and Renaissance Treasures
from the V & A, organized by the
Victoria
and
Albert
Museum,
London,
will make its
U.S.
premiere at the
Norton
Museum
of Art from
October 24, 2007
to
January 6, 2008.
The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see this outstanding
collection of works before they are reinstalled in the V & A’s new
Medieval and Renaissance Galleries, opening in fall 2009. It will
feature 44 works in various media—ivory, wood, bronze, metalwork,
ceramic, stained glass, and a manuscript—ranging in date from the
late
Roman Empire
to about 1600, including an illustrated notebook with fascinating
drawings by Leonardo da Vinci called the
Codex Forster I.

California as Muse: The Art of Arthur & Lucia Mathews. This
exhibition presents a major retrospective of the signature artworks,
furniture and decorative objects by two of
California’s
most important twentieth-century artists. They developed an artistic
style that drew inspiration from the
California
landscape with a devotion to the high art of the classical past,
thereby forming what has become known as the California Decorative
Style. California as Muse: The
Art of Arthur & Lucia Mathews will present 60 examples of the
Matthews's’ light-infused landscapes, graceful figures and
intricately carved furniture and decorative objects, while the
accompanying catalogue chronicles over 250 such creations.

carefully selected exhibition featuring nine works by one of America's most admired artists. Cassatt (1844-1926) was
born near Pittsburgh and trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1866 she left home for Spain and France,
where she settled, seldom returning to the United States during the course of her long life. She nonetheless cherished
her American citizenship and is rightly considered one of this country's most important artistic personalities of the
19th century.
