Lauren Groff, Florida (2018) + Florida-themed photography works

Groff’s collection of stories brings us into a physical world that is at once domestic and wild—a place where the hazards of the natural world lie waiting to pounce, yet the greatest threats and mysteries are still of an emotional psychological nature. We will look at photographs from the Norton’s collection that are seldom on view to see visual representations of the natural and psychological tensions Groff addresses in Florida.

Haruki Murakami, After Dark (2007) + Kunie Sugiura, After Electric Dress B (2001)
Murakami’s novel of late night encounters creates a world suspended between fantasy and reality, between midnight and dawn. Sugiura’s photo-based work, made to commemorate the Japanese avant-garde artist Atsuko Tanaka’s 1956 performance Electric Dress, exposes dichotomies of the grotesque and beautiful, danger and protection. Discuss the connections between the works and the imaginative realities they reveal.
