Jazz Friday is back with Negroni's Trio and a brand new series, Off Topic. This week, through the lens of Feminist theory, Dr. Rebecca Dominguez Karimi analyzes the world of Frida Kahlo’s paintings that depict the tropes of Indigenism and Mexicanidad. Explore mixed-media artforms through floral arrangement during Open Studio, and explore the galleries with our incredible docents, Guías, and FAU Art History Student Spotlight Talks!

  • Off Topic / Indigenismo, Mexicanidad, and Feminism in the Art of Frida Kahlo

    Through the lens of Feminist theory, Dr. Rebecca Dominguez Karimi analyzes the world of Frida Kahlo’s paintings that depict the tropes of Indigenism and Mexicanidad. Briefly examining Kahlo’s life from a historical framework, Dominguez-Karimi will guide us through an investigation of indigenous and Mexican cultural symbols that permeate Kahlo’s artwork, and will discuss the long lasting impact of Kahlo’s art on contemporary Mexican culture.

    Dr. Rebecca Dominguez-Karimi is a Feminist, oral historian, writer, and speaker for the Florida Humanities Council. She graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a PhD in Comparative Studies and specializes in Oral history, Mexican American studies, restorative justice, and Women’s studies. She taught at Nova Southeastern University and Broward College. She recently created an oral history project for the Jacksonville Historical Society entitled “Voces de Hispanos” that chronicles the history of Latinos in Jacksonville from the 1950s to present day. She also designed and implemented “Treasures From Aztlan,” an oral history collection that documents the racist practices of the Jim Crow laws against Mexican Americans in Texas. Each collection contain over 40 oral histories.

  • Open Studio / Claudia Henao

    Join mixed-media artist and florist, Claudia Henao, for an Open Studio revolving around flower arrangements. The artist will offer short demonstrations and you will have the opportunity to work with natural flowers to make your own flower crown, flower bracelet, or small decorative arrangement to take home. This Open Studio is inspired by the Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection exhibition. 

    All Materials are included. Open to all ages and levels of artistic talent!

    Stop by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection to engage in conversations about art with the John I. Leonard High School students from the Norton’s Guía program.

    Enjoy 15 minute-long Mexican Modernism Spotlight Talks in the galleries with Florida Atlantic University Art History Student, Jimmy Diaz Nieves discussing Frida Kahlo's Diego on My Mind (Self Portrait as Tehuana), 1943.

  • FAU Student Spotlight Talks / Luisa Ortiz

    Enjoy 15 minute-long Mexican Modernism Spotlight Talks in the galleries with Florida Atlantic University Art History Student, Luisa Ortiz discussing Frida Kahlo's The Love Embrace of the Universe, the Earth (Mexico), Myself, Diego and Senor Xolotl, 1949.

  • Jazz Friday / Negroni's Trio Featuring Elli Clarke

    With a catalog of 11 albums, 3 Latin Jazz Grammy Nominations (2005, 2012 & 2015) and enough musical experience to captivate listeners of any musical genre, Negroni's Trio is seducing and entertaining audiences across all continents. Negroni’s Trio is comprised of a “father and son team”, Jose Negroni, on piano and keyboards, Nomar Negroni, on drums and percussions, completing the trio are numerous virtuoso bassist on the recordings and live performances. Joining Negroni’s Trio is Elli Clarke- her sultry voice and innate instincts have developed over this long career and she has now found her own unique niche as a truly unique and glamorous “jazz singer.”

Attending Art After Dark

Hours: The museum is currently open to the public until 10 pm on Friday nights.

Entry: Admission during Art After Dark is $10 for Adults & Seniors, $5 for Students. Tickets may be purchased at the Reception Desk or reserved in advance

Parking: Parking is available in the Norton’s main parking lot at 1501 South Dixie Highway, immediately across the street from the Museum. Parking is $5 per car, per day. Norton Members park for free.

Food and drink: The Restaurant at the Norton offers indoor and outdoor seating with beautiful views of our Sculpture Garden. Along with great food, The Restaurant serves creative cocktails, wine, and champagne. Reservations available through Tock.
