PLENA ES
Musicians dressed in white perform with drums and guitars on an outdoor evening stage.

Plena Es, founded by Pierre Ramos in 2004, is a high-energy Latin dance band from South Florida. The group specializes in the Puerto Rican percussion-based styles of bomba and plena. Bomba comes from enslaved Africans in Puerto Rico who used drums to communicate safely and privately through specific rhythmic patterns. Plena music also functioned as a mode of communication: when news outlets and radio stations were controlled by the American government, musicians would take up small hand drums and travel around the city singing lyrics about current events, politicians, religion, gossip, and other everyday topics to spread news freely from person to person.

THEYDREAM (2026, DIR. WILLIAM D. CABALLERO)
Promotional poster for “TheyDream”; text reads “Every Creation Is an Act of Letting Go” and “a film by William D. Caballero.”After 20 years of chronicling his Puerto Rican family, a director and his mother face devastating losses. Through tears and laughter, they craft animations that bring their loved ones back to life, discovering that every act of creation is also an act of letting go. Through a one-of-a-kind blend of miniature artistry, handcrafted figurines, digital rotoscoping, and full 3D motion capture, Caballero and his mother literally transform themselves into their ancestors — reanimating family stories with honesty, complexity, and profound love. Ultimately, THEYDREAM becomes a cinematic act of survival: a testament to creative collaboration, intergenerational healing, and art’s ability to resurrect memory, restore connection, and guide families through the darkest grief toward light.
