This year, the Norton Museum of Art will host a virtual celebration of the Museum's 80th Anniversary. This will be an opportunity to joyfully honor all the ways that the Norton makes our community so extraordinary—and to support the Museum’s ongoing work. Join us for a fun and lively virtual benefit event with artists, special guests, and friends of the Norton, and including and exciting auction presented by Sotheby’s with extraordinary works of art and other exclusive items—all from the safety and comfort of your own home!
This evening will also honor artist María Berrio.
María Berrio is the 8th artist to be selected and featured as part of the prestigious Recognition of Art by Women (RAW) exhibition series. With a planned exhibition opening of January 2 at the Norton, María Berrio: Esperando mientras la noche florence (Waiting for the Night to Bloom) marks the artist’s first solo museum survey, and features the Brooklyn-based, Columbian-born artist’s large-scale collages in which she reflects on issues of immigration and nature’s vulnerability. The Norton’s presentation will include nearly 20 pieces created from 2013 to today, including works on public display for the first time.
Organized by Cheryl Brutvan, Director of Curatorial Affairs and the Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Curator of Contemporary ARt, who has curated the RAW series since its inception in 2011, the exhibition follows past RAW editions including Jenny Saville (2011), Sylvia Plimack Mangold (2012), Phyllida Barlow (2013), Klara Kristalova (2014), Njideka Akunyili Crosby (2016), Svenja Deininger (2017), and Nina Chanel Abney (2019). Mahor support for RAW is from the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund/MLDauray Arts Initiative.
Proceeds up to $450,000 from this year's auction will benefit the Recognition of Art by Women (RAW) exhibition series. Proceeds in excess of $450,000 will benefit the Norton’s curatorial and exhibitions program.
