A Closer Look

Closer Look is open to everyone curious about art! Learning and Community Engagement staff invites participants to look closely at a single artwork in the Norton’s Collection. We discuss the artwork, its potential meanings, and participants’ viewpoints.

A Closer Look / Art, Perception, and Your Brain

Friday, August 9 / 1–2pm & 3–4pm

Explore selected works of art at the Norton with visual neuroscientist Russell D. Hamer, Ph.D. This interactive discussion will open your eyes to some of the perceptual “tricks” that artists masterfully employ to transform an array of colors on a two-dimensional surface into a robust 3D scene rich with form and meaning, implied movement, as well as emotional impact. Conversation led by Glenn Tomlinson, William Randolph Hearst Chief Officer of Learning and Community Engagement.

Holiday Hours Alert

The Norton will not be hosting Art After Dark this week in observance of the holiday.

However, we will be open during the day on Friday, July 4, from 10 am until 5 pm, making it perfect for a relaxing visit before your evening plans. Our regularly scheduled programming of tours, art activities, and more will return next Friday as usual.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Independence Day!
