Theaster Gates creates work that focuses on space theory and land development, sculpture, and performance. Drawing on his training in urban planning and preservation, Gates creates work that focuses on the possibility of the “life within things.” Gates won the Nasher Prize for Sculpture 2018, as well as the Urban Land Institute J.C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development. He is the Lunder Institute Distinguished Visiting Artist and Director of Artist Initiatives at Colby College in Maine.
Gates is joined by David Greene, President of Colby College, who has undertaken ambitious projects to ensure Colby’s leadership among liberal arts colleges, including the establishment of the Lunder Institute for American Art which supports innovative research and creative production.
