Transforming Nature: Joseph Stella’s Modernist Contemporaries

Held in conjunction with the special exhibition Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature, this program will feature talks on Charles Burchfield, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O’Keeffe, contemporaries whose work demonstrates a similar fascination with nature. Brief presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Ellen Roberts, Harold and Anne Berkley Smith Senior Curator of American Art, allowing speakers and the audience to consider the broader context for Stella’s art. Speakers include: Elizabeth Finch, Head Curator, Colby College Museum of Art; Barbara Buhler Lynes, Art History Professor, Author, Curator Emerita, author of the O’Keeffe catalogue raisonné; and Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar, Head of Collections & Charles Cary Rumsey Curator, Burchfield Penny Art Center.
