Reflecting the Gaze: Jillian Mayer and Abigail Reyes
Reflecting the Gaze features video works by two contemporary female-identifying artists, Jillian Mayer and Abigail Reyes. The videos on view present a revision of culture, from telenovelas to Venus de Milo, with the two artists redirecting the typically male-oriented, societal gaze on the women’s place in history. The artists repossess their agency by taking back the otherwise defenseless perspective of how women "should" or are "meant to" behave and be viewed. Mayer and Reyes provide alternative vantage points to these stereotypes in thoughtful, and humorous, forms. This exhibition will be accompanied by a selection of works from the Norton Museum of Art Collection that thematically converse with the videos.
Organized by the Norton Museum of Art.
Support for this exhibition was provided by the Milton and Sheila Fine Endowment for Contemporary Art.
