The Second Grade Initiative includes five schools and, is designed to use the visual arts to enrich literacy and language-arts skills among second graders. The 2019-2020 school year was the pilot program year for this initiative.

During the pilot, second grade teachers from participating schools took part in a summer writing workshop at the Norton to create pre- and post-visit lesson plans based on art from the Museum’s Collection. During the school year, all second-grade classes from partner schools visited the Museum for a Storytelling in Art tour and participated in a hands-on workshop.. The Norton collaborated with the arts and literacy departments at the Palm Beach County School District in order to utilize literacy learning techniques and connect to standards. The pilot culminated in a final art lesson for all second-graders, led by their art teachers at their schools, that reflected upon students’ experiences at the Museum.

Based upon an evaluation conducted during this pilot year and the assessment of teachers, principals, and District administrators, the Museum looks forward to engaging more second grade students across the School District as this innovative program grows in future years.
