We Made It!
Afterschool Arts Outreach Annual Exhibition

This annual student exhibition reflects the creative spirit of eight unique community partnerships, featuring works of art created by children and teens in the Norton's Afterschool Arts Outreach (AAO) program. A team of Norton Teaching Artists engages 150children and teens weekly in hands-on art activities in a variety of media. These artists help students develop self-esteem through positive achievement and creative expression. This year AAO students explored a variety of art forms and visual artists: from virtual field trips to see the special exhibition Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican Modernism (on view last fall at the Norton) and creating lively works of art that celebrate Mexican culture to constructing collagraph prints inspired by Picasso. During field trips to the Museum, they learned about artist Beulah Ecton Woodard in the Norton's collection, and then created vibrant works of art out of clay. Students in the program were encouraged to experiment and dream big to conceptualize their own original works of art. The Norton's Learning and Community Engagement department sustains relationships by bringing educators and artists into the community, aligning itself with grassroots organizations, so the Museum becomes a resource to the community. For 30 years, AAO has provided equitable arts programming to out-of-school-time youth throughout Palm Beach County.
