This month, Member Spotlight features Katrina Sarah Miller, Young Friends Member.

How did you first get involved at the Norton? What prompted you to become a Member?

I joined the Young Friends of the Norton in 2019. The museum had finally re-opened and it was my first time walking the corridor to the Contemporary Art exhibits. There was a large Sam Durant 'End White Supremacy' work to my left and a gorgeous Kara Walker sculpture from 'A Subtlety' to my right. I recognized a Hank Willis Thomas sculpture and then must have walked back and forth about five times grinning and slowly taking it all in. After that, I purchased my membership.

Why is Membership at the Norton important to you?

Membership is important to me because I have been able to share art with my family and community. I work as a social worker and have been able to introduce the Norton and the weekly events to my clients and their families who have made priceless memories here.

What are the most enjoyable aspects of being a Member of the Norton?

The events are always wonderful and well intentioned. My membership at the Norton has also allowed me access to various other museums on my travels, due to reciprocal membership to partner institutions, which has been invaluable.

What is your favorite artwork, collection, or space at the Museum? Why?

I will never forget the gorgeous Augusta Savage sculpture I saw on view at the Norton a year or so prior. I must have remained in that room for an hour. Augusta’s work resonates with me so deeply. I do wish I would have been able to attend the talk on her life and work scheduled for March earlier this year. I am happy that the Norton continues to honor her legacy.

Do you have a story or favorite memory that you would like to share about the Norton?

The opening of 'The Body is a Fiesta' was monumental for me. I met Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons during my trip to Cuba last year and seeing her work in person brought me to tears. I was able to take home a Félix González-Torres candy—which is still in my memory box by the way—and I was able to experience the night with a new friend, Michelle, whom I met earlier that night at the Young Friends season opening event. What a night!

What do you miss most about the Norton?

Nothing compares to being the same room as a historic work of art. I look forward to coming back!
